Year 2018 in Review

2018 – A year feeding my culinary curiosity. A year recording the rhythms of my kitchen. The year I started blogging. Thank you, dear readers, for all your wonderful support by means of inspiring comments and numerous likes.

According to Instagram, these are my top nine blog posts in 2018 commented in reverse order:

9. Heirloom tomato salad

The vibrant colors of the heirloom tomatoes take me back to our summer holiday at the lake of Morat. This dish is all about the complex variety of flavors of the excellent local produce.

8. BΕ“uf bourguignon

I truly love culinary innovation. Yet, sometimes – to quote Gabrielle Hamilton – “it’s so good to be classic and not trendy”. This beef stew is the textbook example thereof – an utterly scrumptious dish in all its authentic simplicity.

7. Sturgeon with artichokes and Kalamata olives

Swiss farmed sturgeon reminds me of our lovely wedding in the Bernese Alps. I connect so many beautiful memories with this dish. I’m correspondingly pleased to find it in my top nine.

6. Parmigiana tower πŸ’š

A modern take on a traditional dish. Or ridiculously flamboyant, micro-sized snobbery in the eyes of an Italian. Anyway, this dish combines delicious umami with even more delicious umami. And that can’t be wrong, right?

5. Happy Birthday Switzerland πŸ‡¨πŸ‡

A playful decoration exercise in honor of the Swiss National Day: a white coconut and skyr cross on a redcurrant field. I feel patriotic as I write.

4. Tuna β€’ Passion fruit β€’ Lime β€’ Coriander

Another visually enthralling dish with strong individual flavors of the individual ingredients. Sustainability caught tuna seared to perfection, served on a mirror of sweet acidity and topped off with spicy herbs. This dish actually made me high as a kite.

3. Duck in a rhubarb meadow

This is the dish depicting my passion for foraging and floral plating in the most expressive way. Moreover, it showcases the use of seasonal, homegrown harvest in combination with my preferred cooking method – the sous vide technique. In a nutshell: A powerful presentation that stands out in flavor and, by far, my favorite dish in 2018.

2. Caffè al pistacchio

Too simple to qualify as a recipe, but so delicious that this hot beverage definitely deserves to be in the top nine. If you ever come across pistachio cream, give this coffee drink a try. No one I know ever regretted it.

1. Berries β€’ Vanilla β€’ Verbena β€’ Flowers

After the rain, comes the sun. Or after burnt merengue for our wedding anniversary dinner, comes the most popular blog post in 2018. That sums up this dolce pretty accurately.
