I’m a working mum. With a busy schedule. Always on the run. Until the end of August, we have only three weekends still totally free of engagements. I appreciate those free weekends. Not because I don’t have any duties, but because there’s room for spontaneity. Last weekend was one of those free weekends. Perfect timing to be spontaneous and accept the food truckers Sam Sager’s and Anibal Gamez’s generous invitation to visit their pop-up restaurant The Situation in Bern.
The concept of The Situation is quite straightforward. Anibal cooks and Sam waits the tables. A modern fusion kitchen with Venezuelan influences. The gourmet menu changes bi-weekly and consists of a soup, a salad, a main and a dessert. As a four-course or a freely combinable three-course dinner. Alternatively, Anibal offers his mellow fish and vegan curries. All dishes are made from scratch and based on local, seasonal produce. Mostly organic or even biodynamic. The same goes for the drinks. Home-made or locally brewed.
The Situation is located at Apfelgold, a cozy food bar in the hip Länggasse area. The atmosphere is warm, homely. Almost like in a private living room. That impression is further enhanced by Sam’s Californian nature – uncomplicated, yet considerate.
The contrast between the easygoing atmosphere and the haute-cuisine makes the experience at The Situation exceptional. Our daughters got their main courses prior to our starters. Totally against the fine dining etiquette but totally child friendly and a premise for a smooth evening. My hubby and I enjoyed the most sensational culinary masterpieces. One after the other. Distinguished flavor combination (What do you think about pork with black beans and raspberries?). No filling side dishes (perfectly in line with my low-carb cooking). Visually appealing plating (Take a look at vibrant colors of the beetroot soup!). Lovely stoneware (I have a weakness for black plates). My favorite kind of cuisine, really, shared with my favorite peeps in the world. What more can a busy foodie mum ask for?
